Consulting refers to any professional relationship that’s not therapy. Therapy involves a diagnosis, such as depression. In consultation I help people apply psychology in their lives. Examples include:
- Personal consultation: Clients may want to talk about career issues, meaning- of-life issues, and relationship and communication issues. Examples of personal consultation include:
- Career decisions: to remain in one’s career or to change to another, or to select a career path that is more in harmony with one’s personality, learning style, and goals in life. To remain in one’s career but in a more self-friendly way. To communicate more effectively at work, including solv- ing problems and accomplishing goals, through a combination of under standing self and others better. To reflect on how one got into one’s cur- rent career or work situation, what it means, and where one would like to go.
- Relationship improvement: increasing understanding of one’s own needs and goals, and those of others, in relationships, including couples, family, and work relationships.
- Coping with stress: improving relaxation and mindfulness skills, understanding sources of stress–good and bad–in one’s life, reflecting how one responds to stress, and improving self- and life- management skills to improve quality of life.
- Meaning-of-life: Reflecting on questions and integrating insights and experiences that raise questions about one’s relationship with life, including with a career, a faith tradition, etc. Integrating the psychological side of spirituality into one’s life.
